Americans everywhere are working hard for the money, only to have to spend it on insurance policies. With the amount of money policyholders give to insurance companies each year, you would the insurance claim process would be as harmless as possible. Unfortunately, filing an insurance claim can be one of the most frustrating things you will ever encounter if you don’t go about it the right way.

Make sure filing an insurance claim is necessary before you begin the process. For example, if you are involved in a fender bender, it might not be worth it to get your auto insurance company involved. Consumers who practice filing an insurance claim too often could lead to their insurance company raising their premiums or canceling their policy altogether.

Here are some general tips you should be aware of when filing an insurance claim:

  1. Don’t wait to file. Most insurance companies will give you a window of time for when you should file a claim, so don’t wait for it to expire.
  2. Be aware of your policy. You are just wasting your time and energy by filing an insurance claim that is for something not even listed in your policy. Know your policy and know whether or not you can file a claim.
  3. Record everything. Be sure to document everything associated with the event. Take photos of the car accident or record what was stolen if your home is robbed.
  4. Accuracy matters. Insurance fraud is no laughing matter, so take the time and care in accurately and honestly filling out the forms when filing an insurance claim.
  5. Obtain a second opinion. If you are concerned that your insurance company isn’t treating you right then take it to the state insurance department for unbiased answers to your pertinent questions.
